Derelict church ruins, the magnificent Johannisburg Castle, fragrant forests and flowering meadows – the town of Aschaffenburg in north-west Bavaria in Germany offers you the perfect blend of nature and culture.
Aschaffenburg is charming in every season. In spring, the famous magnolia trees blossom; in summer, the fig and vine-blanketed slopes of the St. Germain Terraces burst with Mediterranean flare; in autumn, the deciduous trees in Bavaria’s oldest landscape park turn golden; and in winter, the medieval church in the Schöntal Park is covered in snow.
The ten varied Tours in this Collection take you to the most beautiful corners of Aschaffenburg and its surroundings. Explore one of the most important buildings of the late Renaissance period, the Johannisburg Castle, on short city walks; walk through the Mediterranean-style castle garden to the impressive Pompeianum; lose yourself in the winding narrow alleys of Aschaffenburg's old town with its quaint half-timbered houses; and enjoy an incomparable view over the town from the Devil’s Pulpit. When you get hungry, traditional pubs and restaurants are around almost every corner.
Four of the six European Cultural Routes take you to the outskirts of Aschaffenburg. With the ‘Schweinheimer Passion, you circle the striking Erbig and hike through beautiful heaths up to the famous three crosses on the panoramic mountain. In the far south-east of Aschaffenburg, the quarries and red sandstone formations and beautiful views over the hilly Spessart landscape are wonderful. On the other hand, to the north-east of Aschaffenburg, extinct volcanic vents and sprawling forests await. In Obernau municipality, the sky is not the only blue thing, as the title of the cultural trail suggests. Here, you can walk through orchards, meadows, and mixed forests, following the gentle meanders of the river.
Almost all of the walks are designed as circulars, or end centrally in the picturesque old town of Aschaffenburg so you don't have to worry about how to get back at the end. This way you can completely surrender to the charm of the Spessart and walk from the Middle Ages to the Mediterranean.
