A long time ago, giant dinosaurs roamed around Dinosaur National Monument in the United States. Among them were Allosaurus, one of the largest carnivores of all time, Stegosaurus, which stands out with its tail spines and dorsal plates, and the gigantic Diplodocus, a herbivorous sauropod. In Dinosaur National Monument, you can marvel at some of the best-preserved dinosaur bones and even touch some of them. Numerous hiking trails invite you to follow in the footsteps of the ancient giants. In this Collection, I present 11 varied trails that are suitable for families as well as those seeking a challenge.
The Dinosaur National Monument stretches across the two states of Utah and Colorado. Nine of the 11 trails are located in Utah. If you only have time for one of them, I recommend the Fossil Discovery Trail. It not only takes you to the centrepiece of the park, an exhibition in an open quarry with over 1,500 bones but also along various rock formations in which further bone remains and even entire fossils are embedded in the rock.
Most of the trails in Utah can be found in the Cub Creek region, where you can discover interesting pictograms (painted on rock) and petroglyphs (carved into rock) of past cultures alongside remote wilderness and untamed rivers. A visit to old settlement sites of individual families is also included.
In the area on the Colorado side, you can walk to two fantastic viewpoints: Harpers Corner and Gates of Lodore. The majestic Green River, which has characterised the landscape for thousands of years, is the star of both hikes. Sometimes it flows several hundred metres below you, sometimes you are right on its banks. Unforgettable memories are guaranteed.
And if you fancy a little more adventure, Dinosaur National Monument is one of the few parks where you are allowed to go off the official trails. This enables you to experience the most remote and spectacular corners – provided you have the right equipment, sufficient water and excellent orientation and navigation skills. Have fun in the realm of the giants.
