From perched villages to renowned forest massifs, the GR 99 offers you the opportunity to discover the rural, peaceful and incredibly diverse landscapes of Provençe. This route is divided into two distinct parts: the first five stages allow you to explore the Var hinterland and the Sainte-Baume regional nature park. Expect peaceful paths along the edge of fields, dense forests and vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see. From village to village, you will also have the opportunity to discover geological curiosities.
The second part of the itinerary, between 1,000-year-old gorges, mountains and lakes, opens the doors to the Verdon regional nature park. The palette of colours expands, and the landscape is marked by the constant contrast between the white of the limestone cliffs for which the region is famous, and the blue of its lakes and rivers. At the end of your adventure, you’ll feel as if you have crossed two truly different regions in one long hike. This is what I think makes the GR 99 so rich.
Here, I have divided the route into 10 stages. Each day ends in a village where you’ll find several options for food and accommodation. Those who prefer to pitch a tent can rejoice as camping is allowed in the two regional nature parks crossed, between sunset and sunrise. However, beware: between 15 June and 15 September, camping is prohibited in the forest massifs of the Sainte-Baume regional nature park during periods of severe fire risk. The local authorities put up clear signs to warn you and it’s important for your safety to respect these regulations. On the second part of the route, in the Verdon Regional Nature Park, camping is permitted except on the banks of the lakes and in the gorges. You will also find a large number of campsites on the second part of the route.
As for transport, bus 6 of the Mistral network allows you to connect the Toulon SNCF station to Revest-les-Eaux. For more information, go to: reseaumistral.com/en. To leave from Trigance, it’s a little less easy. You’ll have to go to Comps-sur-Artuby, where you can take the ZOU 2221 bus to the SNCF station in Les Arcs-Draguignan. For more information, visit the network's website: zou.maregionsud.fr/en.
Hitchhiking is quite common in the region, especially during the summer so you shouldn't have any trouble finding lifts to cover the 10 kilometres (6 mi) between Trigance and Comps-sur-Artuby. If you want to keep walking, the GR 49 also passes through Trigance and takes you to Rougon! If you want to know more, check out this Collection: komoot.com/collection/1309970
Thanks to the mild temperatures of the region, the GR 99 can be walked in all seasons. However, I recommend that you hike it between April and October. Then, you can take advantage of the campsites and other seasonal businesses. Beware of the high temperatures if you decide to hike in summer. Remember to start early and keep well hydrated to enjoy your hike.
